History

The Chorus was started in 1989 by a group of musicians and professional women in Dallas with a membership of thirty-five.  The singers were mainly women who enjoyed coming together to sing all types of music, providing excellent performances, and serving education and the community with a wide variety of musical expertise.  It was the only chorus in Texas that was predominantly composed of gay women, although it is currently for all women, whatever their age, race, or sexual identity.

The Chorus began with Cynthia Knott as its director, a well-known conductor in Dallas.  She lead them for 2 1/2 years until resigning and leaving to form her currently well-known Children’s Choir of Greater Dallas.  During those years the Chorus sang in churches and varied venues across the city.  The tradition of learning all of their music by memory, making their own costumes and choreography, and raising much of their own money was begun.

Progress

In 1992 Dr. Timothy Seelig became director of the group and was to serve in that capacity for the next 9 years.  During that time the Chorus grew to more than 100 members, premiered several great musical productions in collaboration with the Turtle Creek Chorale.  Directors who followed Dr. Seelig have been Dana Lobaugh, Mark Stamper, and Cathy Brown.  Our current director (since January 2005) is Melinda Imthurn, a previous singer with the Chorus.

Acheivement

The Women's Chorus of Dallas was invited to sing in Austin at the inauguration of Governor Ann Richards and to sing before Queen Elizabeth when she visited Texas. More recently the Chorus sang at the inauguration of Dallas ’ Mayor Laura Miller.  The Chorus recently gave a concert in New York City, where they were invited for the third time to sing in Carnegie Hall.

The Chorus has commissioned and premiered works such as “Only Human” and partnered with the Turtle Creek Chorale to premiere “Sing for the Cure,” which tells the story of breast cancer survival, with Maya Angelou providing the narration, and “Old Turtle,” a children’s story about world peace.  The Chorus has sung in performances of “Voices of Light” and “Carmina Burana” in
Dallas’ Meyerson Symphony Center .  In addition, the women sing regularly to raise money for Children’s Organizations, such as Youth First Texas, and for the Komen Foundation, to raise money for breast cancer education.  They frequently sing on WRR’s live Christmas program at the Adolphus Hotel and perform in the city’s Old City Park Christmas Celebrations.

Today

The Chorus continues under the Artistic Direction of Melinda Imthurn.  The Chorus presents three formal concerts each season
